The notice is meant, as claimed by the commission, to conduct an investigation of suspected and bogus voters. The majority of these voters are Muslims, says a report in Roznama Rashtriya Sahara.

The Election Commission said that among 9.5 lakh names many are suspected to be enrolled in more than on places while some others are suspected to be bogus; therefore the notice has been issued.

The Shiv Sena has reportedly described the commission move as its success. The party said its agitation against the infiltrating voters has turned out to be a true step.

Shiv Sainiks claim that Subhash Desai, one of Sena leaders, met election commissioner Debashish Chakrabarti last month and complained to him that 10 lakh names in voter lists are bogus and enrolled in more than one places; therefore they should be taken out after investigation.

The notice has created fear among the citizens especially Muslims. It has caused anxiety in the Muslim-dominated areas where the process of enrolling the names in the voter list is going on.
