Miliband to join EU emergency talks on Israeli massacres

The meeting, held under the French presidency of the 27-nation group, comes after demonstrations have been held around Europe protesting at the failure by western countries to condemn the continuing slaughter of Palestinians in 4-days of air strikes.

In his first statement about the latest Israeli massacres on Monday evening, Prime Minister Gordon Brown simply said he was “appalled” by violence in Gaza and called for a belated ceasefire.

Peace campaigners in London have been holding daily demonstrations outside the Israeli Embassy, condemning the Israeli slaughter and accusing Britain and other western countries of being complicit in the killings.

In a message of support for the protests, former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone accused the US of endorsing the massacres and criticised the British government to demand an immediate end to the Israeli attacks, which started last Saturday.

“This refusal to uphold the elementary interests of humanity by powers which could stop Israel’s attacks is based on the falsehood that there is an equivalence between the actions of the Palestinians and the actions of Israel,” Livingstone said.

The opposition Conservatives in Britain have also indicated that they are backing the Labour government’s pro-Israeli policies, while criticism has been expressed by the Liberal Democrats.

“If David Miliband does not realize this action is disproportionate then he must be the last person in Britain who thinks so,” the Lib Dem’s shadow foreign secretary Edward Davey said.

Davy also warned that “Israel ought to have learnt from its attack on Lebanon which only served to strengthen the cause of extremism.”
