London : Peace campaigners Tuesday converged on the Israeli Embassy in London for the third successive day to protest about the continuing massacre of Palestinians in Gaza.
According to reports, over 360 Palestinians, including scores of women and children, have been indiscriminately killed and more than 1,400 injured in Israeli air raids since last Saturday, more than double the numbers killed in the Mumbai terrorist attacks.
“Not content after three days of devastating slaughter, the Israeli government promises more barbarity to come,” said Stop the War Coalition (STWC), one of the organisers of the protests.
The Palestine Solidarity Campaign, which has also been jointly organising demonstrations across Britain with British Muslim Initiative (BMI), called for the British government to act to end the latest Israeli massacres.
Activists were also urged to write to Prime Minister Gordon Brown to demand an immediate end to Israel’s military assault on Gaza and an end to its two-and-a-half year siege.
In an open letter to Brown, BMI said it was “notable how you rightly rushed to Islamabad and New Delhi in the wake of the Mumbai attacks in order to calm all parties, avert escalation and further bloodshed.”
“One wonders if you intend to visit Tel Aviv and make clear to the Israeli leadership nothing can excuse nor justify targeting charities, hospitals, medical stores and pharmacies, mosques and universities, causing maximum casualties,” it said.
According to an IRNA correspondent at the protest, there were several hundred demonstrators at the latest rally but many more police than before. This compared to around 2,000 who joined the first two days of the rallies.
The joint organisers have vowed to continue to stage daily protests in London until Israel is forced to end its barbarity against Palestinians besieged in Gaza, often described as the world’s largest prison.
