London : Dozens of rallies, marches and vigils were being held across the UK Saturday in the latest wave of local protests against Israel’s continuing massacre of more than 1,100 Palestinians in Gaza.
The biggest demonstration was expected to be held again in London at a rally in Trafalgar Square following last weekend’s national march in the British capital that was attended by up to 200,000 people.
Last Saturday’s march, the second since Israel launched its latest wave of bloodletting in Gaza, culminated at the Israeli Embassy, the scene of daily protests. A continuous vigil has also been set up outside the British parliament in the capital city.
Demonstrators have already taken to the streets across the UK in unprecedented droves, angered by the silence of western governments in condemning, let alone stopping Israel’s massacres in Gaza.
The new series of protests included a rally being held opposite Nurul Islam Mosque in Waltham Forest, east London and a march through Tunbridge Wells on the outskirts of the capital.
In Southampton on the southern English coast, over 1,000 ballons were being released to represent the number of Palestinians killed so far by Israel, while on the east coast, a rally and vigil was being held at Southend.
A major rally was also organized in Birmingham, Britain’s second biggest city, where Labor MP Jeremy Corbyn was due to be among the speakers.
Nearby in Worcester, a vigil with stalls, music and food petitions was being staged and in adjacent Hereford, where there was a Stop the Massacre demonstration.
Also in the Midlands, Christian priest Rev Warren Bardsley was due to report back from Jerusalem as a human rights observer to a rally in Lichfield. Pro-Palestinian stalls were also being set up in Oxford in a show of solidarity with the besieged Gazans.
Many towns and cities in northern England were also the scene of rallies and vigils, including in Newcastle, Middlesbrough, York, Doncaster, Bradford, Leeds, Bury, Lancaster, Chester and Liverpool.
In Manchester, where there has been local vigils held outside the offices of the BBC, the focus was on leafleting support for a boycott of Israeli goods.
Across Wales, there were demonstrations and rallies being held in the capital Cardiff, in Swansea and Newport in the south and in Bangor in the north.
