New Delhi : Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Kerala MP A.P. Abdullakutty, suspended from the party for praising Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Monday insisted he had committed no wrong.
“I have not made any mistake. I am very sad as the party has not been convinced by my explanation,” Abdullakutty told IANS over telephone in his first detailed reaction to the suspension.
The decision to suspend the two-time Lok Sabha MP from Kannur was taken Saturday by the CPI-M’s Mayyil Area Committee in Kannur district.
Abdullakutty was first given a showcause notice.
In his reply, the MP said he had only lauded the development initiatives of Modi and that the chief minister played a pro-active role in attracting investment and boosting Gujarat’s development. The Marxist MP insisted he did not approve of Modi’s “communal stand”.
Asked if he would accept the suspension, the MP said: “I don’t know whether I can remain a party worker when I am under suspension. Please don’t put me in more trouble.”
Abdullakutty is a controversial figure in the CPI-M. He once shocked the party by performing Haj without seeking its permission. And he had said on another occasion that shutdown strikes would harm Kerala.
IANS asked him what he planned to do now. The MP merely said: “I have big dreams about my future and the future of the nation.”
