New Delhi : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was discharged from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here early Sunday, a week after having undergone a coronary bypass surgery. He will be able to work from home within a week and would attend office after three weeks, officials said.
“The prime minister has been discharged early this (Sunday) morning. At 7.30 a.m. he left for his home. Now he will be convalescing at home where he will also be given physiotherapy treatment,” the prime minister’s media adviser Deepak Sandhu told IANS.
“As he left, he appeared (to be) in good condition. He was walking, waving to everybody. He thanked the entire panel of doctors, who saw him off. His wife (Gursharan Kaur) was with him,” Sandhu said.
Manmohan Singh, 76, was operated upon at the AIIMS Jan 24 to remove five arterial blockages. He returned to his 7 Race Course Road residence after a week of post-operative care at the premier hospital.
The 11-member panel of doctors that treated the prime minister feels that he has made excellent progress so far, Sandhu said.
The official said Manmohan Singh would follow a normal diet and walking regime as prescribed by his doctors. A team of doctors would also be monitoring his health and progress at home.
“He will return to work after three weeks at least. He has after all undergone a bypass surgery,” she said.
Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss told reporters outside AIIMS: “He was cheerful and walking. He enquired about the activities happening. He is on his way to a speedy recovery. In a week’s time he will start working from home. The prime minister will take three weeks to come to office and work.”
