New Delhi : Lok Sabha was adjourned Friday over two hours ahead of the scheduled time due to lack of quorum.
According to the list of business, the house should meet till 6 p.m. but there were less than 40 members present in both the treasury and opposition benches. It was adjourned for the day at 3.45 p.m.
The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) of Orissa alleged that the United Progressive Alliance government was not interested in the house proceedings. “I am talking about BJD not Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and all our members are present. We are capable and we are the future of the country,” said BJD MP T. Satpathi.
The BJD is an alliance partner of BJP and it has three members in the house.
However, the ruling Congress members protested and pointed out the absence of members in the benches of the opposition.
Deputy Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal, who was in the chair, stopped the proceedings for five minutes to allow more members to be present and meet the quorum but to no avail.
Finally, he adjourned the house for the day at 3.45 p.m.
According to norms, at least 10 percent of the members should be present to complete the quorum. The Lok Sabha has 543 MPs.
