Bhopal : A Youth Congress worker in Indore town of Madhya Pradesh Sunday attempted to commit suicide but was stopped by the police before he could set himself on fire, the police said.
The incident occurred a little before a function the Congress’ Indore unit organised to mark the unveiling of the late prime minister Indira Gandhi’s statue.
A couple of hours before the function was slated to start, Youth Congress worker Girish Soni doused himself with kerosene but he was restrained by the police before he could set himself afire.
“Soni has been arrested by the police and action would be taken against him as per the law”, Cantonment police station chief Santosh Singh told IANS.
Soni later told media persons that he made every effort to get the statue of Indira Gandhi installed at Navlakha Square, but when he succeeded in this endeavour, he was deprived of any recognition due to groupism in the party.
Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit unveiled the statue in the presence of several party leaders after Soni was arrested by the police.
