New Delhi : Indian designer Raakesh Agarvwal, who ran away from home to chase his designing dreams against the wishes of his family, is now set to showcase his work at a prestigious fashion event in Scotland for the second time.
Agarvwal has been selected to participate in the St. Andrews Charity Fashion Feb 28 in Scotland where he will be rubbing shoulders with international designers like Luella, Giorgio Armani and DKNY amongst others.
“This is a charity event and you just have to send your clothes. They style the clothes of various designers and then put up a show. We (designers) have to just sit back and relax,” the 30-year-old said.
Agarvwal, who hails from Adilabad town in Andhra Pradesh, says he ran away from home to pursue his dreams.
“I actually had to run away from my family. It was very difficult. My parents were against my decision of joining NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology) and pursuing a career in the fashion industry. So my sister gave me some money and I left home to chase my dreams,” he said.
“I come from a Marvadi family where joining the family business is the norm. They stopped talking to me but now things have improved a bit between us,” Agarvwal said.
He now wants to dress up Bollywood beauties like Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Sonam Kapoor for red carpet events.
“I don’t think I can do simple things. My designs have a sense of red carpet sophistication. I love to dress up women who are sexy and confident and know how to carry even a simple shirt with poise and grace,” Agarvwal told IANS.
“At the same time, any woman can wear my clothes and feel like a princess because that is how I look at them – as dream girls and princess,” he added.
“I am in conversation with some top-notch production houses, lets see what happens,” the Delhi-based designer said.
After graduating in 2000, Agarvwal worked with designer Tarun Tahiliani for around five years and launch his own label ‘Raakesh Agarvwal’ with business partner Apurbe Tiwari in 2006.
In September 2007, Agarvwal made his debut at the Lakme Fashion Week (LFW), a memorable m,oment for him as his work got rave reviews.
“I still can’t forget that moment when top-notch celebrities were sitting in the front row and watching my collection. They didn’t know me because I was nobody, but after the show got over, I realised my whole life has changed,” he said.
Though Agarvwal designs only for women, he plans to launch his menswear collection very soon.
