“The EU and US remain wholly committed to ensuring that all citizens of Afghanistan, women and men equally, benefit in full from their fundamental universal human and democratic rights,” said a joint EU-US Foreign Ministers statement.

Afghanistan was one of the main issues discussed at an EU-US summit attended by President Barack Obama in Prague on Sunday.

The EU and US urged Afghanistan to continue on its path of progress, noting the significant progress since 2002 on the status of women in Afghanistan.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai asked Saturday the Justice Ministry to review the family law and said if anything in it contravenes the country’s constitution or Shariah law, then “measures will be taken.” The law, signed by Karzai last month, aims to regulate family life inside Afghanistan’s Shiite community.(end) nk.wsa KUNA 061242 Apr 09NNNN
