“Its shape, size, meaning and ideology is not known and is just hazy… it needs to be seen only as a research item. The prophets of this front have been unable to explain what they stand for,” he told reporters here.

The veteran carefully deflected any tricky questions, especially on his son K.Muraleedharan, the state president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), who is contesting from the newly-created Wayanad seat.

“The 20 candidates who come first in the 20 Lok Sabha seats in the state would emerge victorious,” he said in response to a question whether he thought his son will win from Wayanad.

Asked if he, as a father, did not want his son to win, Karunakaran retorted: “In elections, there is no father and no son.”

To questions why he asked his supporters to exercise their franchise based on their conscience, he said they would vote for the Congress only.

Karunakaran, who turned 90 a few months back, is not involved in active election campaigning – for the first time in his seven-decade-long political career – due to health reasons.
