The children were playing with the explosive device, taking it to be a toy, in Luqman Banda village in Lower Dir of the restive NWFP, the online edition of Dawn newspaper quoted residents as saying.

The residents said students of the government girls’ primary school Luqman Banda picked the device lying near a wall of the school and carried it to their home.

The device exploded, killing ten children on the spot and injuring four when they had gathered around the bomb, the report said. The injured were rushed to a hospital where one of them succumbed to his injuries.

The victims included six boys and five girls.

Some villagers said the bomb was planted near the wall of the girls’ school. Others were of the view that a street vendor while selling baby toys handed over the device to the children.
