Lucknow : A 70-year-old man lured a six-year-old girl into his house on the pretext of giving her sweets and raped her in an Uttar Pradesh village. The septuagenarian, who has grandchildren of his own, has been arrested, police said Saturday.
The incident took place Friday evening in Rudhali village of Sant Kabir Nagar district, about 250 km from here.
The elderly man waylaid the girl, who lives in the same neighbourhood, when she was returning home after playing.
“When the girl was returning home after playing in the fields, the man, on the pretext of giving sweets, asked her to come inside his house. He raped the girl after stuffing cloth into her mouth,” police Inspector Mohan Ram told IANS on telephone.
A complaint was filed by the girl’s family Saturday and the man was arrested.
Ram said medical examination of the girl had confirmed rape.
Asked about the condition of the girl, Ram said: “She is being treated at a hospital. Her condition is stated to be critical.”
The accused was living separately from his family for some years, police said.
