The workers were on way to a construction site near the border with Pakistan Sunday morning when their vehicle was blown up by a roadside bomb in Haskamina district of eastern Nangarhar province, Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, spokesman for the provincial governor said.

“Seven people, all innocent labourers, were killed in the blast and one more was wounded,” he said, adding that the workers were building outposts for border police forces in the district.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for Sunday’s blast.

Taliban militants, who lost power in late 2001 in a US military invasion, rely heavily on use of roadside bombings as part of their campaign against the Western-backed Afghan government.
