Kolkata : The West Bengal government may ask for deployment of central paramilitary forces in East Midnapore’s trouble-torn Nandigram if the law and order situation deteriorates, an official said here Sunday.
“If the law and order situation in Nandigram further deteriorates, we’ll have to take action to bring that under control. We might seek assistance of central paramilitary forces, if needed,” state chief secretary Ashok Mohan Chakraborty told reporters here.
A high-level meeting, led by Chakraborty, was convened at state secretariat Writers’ Building to review the situation in the violence-scarred Nandigram. State Inspector General (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia and other senior police officers were also present in the meeting.
“We’ve requested all the residents of Nandigram not to indulge in any kind of violence. We’ve also asked them to cooperate with the district administration and the police,” Chakraborty said, admitting that there have been some untoward incidents during the post-poll period in the troubled-pocket.
According to a police officer, two Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) activists were killed Saturday in a clash with opposition Trinamool Congress supporters in Nandigram.
This apart, a two-year-old girl and her father – a Trinamool Congress supporter – died in a bomb attack Thursday night in the same region.
Meanwhile, an all-party meeting was also held at district headquarters Tamluk to restore normalcy in the volatile zone.
