Congress leaders, cadres held for protest in Chhattisgarh

Raipur: Police arrested Chhattisgarh Congress unit president Dhanendra Sahu, leader of opposition Ravindra Choubey along with over 200 party workers Thursday when they were on way to state Chief Minister Raman Singh’s official residence to stage protests.

The Congress leaders and cadres were held when they defied police warnings and insisted on demonstrating in front of the chief minister’s residence to highlight the suicide by a farmer Suresh Yadav.

Yadav, a resident of Singarbhata village of Raipur district, took the extreme step recently allegedly due to being harassed by local revenue officials.

District Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar said that all the Congress leaders and cadres were released within an hour of their arrest.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Chandrasekhar Sahu denied the Congress charges at a hurriedly convened press conference here.
