Rain brings respite to coastal Orissa

Bhubaneswar : Rainfall in Orissa’s coastal region has brought some respite from the heat wave that has killed 33 people in the state this summer, a met official said Friday.

Temperatures in the coastal towns of Puri, Gopalpur, Paradeep and Balasore were 33.2, 32.6, 33, and 34.3 degrees Celsius respectively after the rainfall Thursday.

The state capital recorded 1.9 mm rainfall, while Puri, Gopalpur and Cuttack received 6.9 mm, 68.4 mm and 16.0 mm rainfall respectively, an official at the Bhubaneswar meteorological office told IANS.

The western part of the state, however, continued to face scorching heat with several places recording temperatures more than 40 degrees Celsius Thursday.

Titilagarh town recorded the highest temperature of 44 degrees Celsius. Sambalpur and Bolangir towns both recorded 43.6 degrees and Jharsuguda 42.9 degrees Celsius.

According to the state revenue control room, at least 33 people had died due to sunstroke till Friday and health officials were examining 44 other alleged deaths due to the heat wave.
