New Delhi: While strongly condemning the attack on Hyderabad police on May 18 in which a Home Guard jawan was killed and a Head Constable seriously injured, the Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee took exception to the attempts of the police and media to present the attack as revenge for the post-Mecca Masjid blast police firing two years ago.
“Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee strongly condemns the attack on police picket at Falaknuma bus stand and expresses its grief and sorrow over the incidence in which a Home Guard lost his life and a Head constable severely injured. Civil Liberties believe that there is no space for violence in Democracy and civil society, it cannot solve the problems,” Lateef Muhammad Khan, General Secretary, CLMC said in a statement today.
He also condemned the move to connect this incident with that of the Mecca Masjid blast and subsequent police firing, terming it as deliberate attempt to shield the real culprits who are responsible for the mosque blast.
“Connecting this incidence with 18th May i.e. the day of Macca Masjid bomb blast and subsequent police firing and with the torture on Muslim youth is like protecting the real culprits. As usual police, unofficially this time again has thrown a Muslim name and a new organization through media. This is the old practice and act of the anti-Muslim faction present in police department, who are always ready for a chance of this kind of incidence to target the Muslims,” Khan said.
On May 18, 2007 bombs were triggered in the Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad, killing six persons. While people came to street to protest the blast the police had greeted them with bullets, killing nine of them. The CBI is looking into the blast case. A state-level commission is probing the police firing. Two years on, neither has submitted the reports.
