Pilot Pen: Bhupathi, Sania qualify for doubles finals

New Delhi : India’s Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza booked the final berth in their respective doubles event at the Pilot Pen Classic tennis tournament in New Haven, US.

Even though it was a straight set victory for Bhupathi and his Serbian partner Nenad Zimonjic in the men’s doubles semis Friday, the going against Ashley Fisher Australia and Eric Butorac of the US wasn’t easy.

The Indo-Serb pair managed a 7-5, 7-6 (2) win to book their berth in the men’s doubles summit clash, according to tournament organisers.

In the final, Bhupathi and Zimonjic will meet Polish duo Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski, who defeated Jordan Kerr of Australia and Jamie Murray of Britain 6-2 6-3.

Sania and her Italian partner Mara Santangelo also struggled to defeat second-seeded Kveta Peschke of Czech Republic and Rennae Stubbs of Australia 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 to reach the finals.

The third-seeded Indo-Italian pair will face top-seeded Zimbabwean Cara Black and Liezel Huber of the US in the title clash.

Black and Huber got past the Czech-US pair of Iveta Benesova and Bethanie Mattek 4-6, 6-0, 10-5.
