Responding to queries by APP, the Commonwealth Secretariat spokesman Eduardo del Buey said: “While it would not be appropriate for the Commonwealth to comment on the specific judgment of the Supreme Court (with reference to Nawaz Sharif petition), we note that Pakistan Government has said it will respect the decision of the Superior Court.”

The spokesperson further said the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law are fundamental political values that all Commonwealth members have repeatedly affirmed their commitment to.

“It is for individual political leaders of Pakistan to decide how best to serve the interests of their constituents through participation in national elections”.

“The Commonwealth certainly encourages the provision, by an independent election commission, of a level playing field for all political parties”. This is an important component of the process of conducting credible elections in any country.

The spokesman stated the Commonwealth remains engaged with the Government of Pakistan and stands ready to provide technical assistance in the build up to forthcoming general elections.

“It would also be ready to observe the electoral process, if invited to do so,” the spokesman added.
