Some Congress leaders have been accused of using fancy, illegal number plates for the vehicles they use.

State Congress committee president Subhash Shirodkar said he would raise within the party the issue of violation of vehicular norms to curb its legislators and ministers from flouting motor vehicle regulations.

“I will also be taking up the matter with the transport department to haul up any erring person violating these rules, be it an ordinary citizen or our minister or MLA,” Shirodkar said. He was commending Youth Congress leaders for carrying out a week-long road safety campaign.

Several party legislators and ministers have been known to flaunt luxury high-end vehicles with single digit VIP numbers, while motor vehicles rules demand that the number-plates bear the entire unique serial number, allotted by the department, for identification purposes.

Francisco alias Mickky Pacheco, a controversial Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) minister, who had bought a Hummer H2 Geiger recently, was caught by the transport department for not registering the luxury vehicle.

The minister had allegedly used 12 as a registration number, because it coincided with his date of birth.
