“The total number of cases of public grievances received in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), cabinet secretariat and the department of administrative reforms and public grievances is 109,620, 101,995, 124,052 and 52,933 during 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 (up to June 30) respectively,” Minister of State for Personnel and Public Grievances Prithviraj Chavan told parliament in a written reply to a question Thursday.

“Out of them, 28,489, 29,591, 37,879 and 18,267 were respectively forwarded during these years to various ministries and departments for appropriate action. Directions have already been issued to all ministries and departments to redress grievances of the citizens within a period of two months,” he added.

The minister said that the redressal of grievances is primarily the responsibility of the ministries, departments and organisations concerned.

“However, the overall status is reviewed periodically. With the introduction of a centralised public grievance redressal and monitoring system, a citizen can view the status of his complaint on the web,” Chavan added.
