“We dont know why but Clinton is interested in one technology – the direct seeding methodology for paddy cultivation,” said a senior official of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) of which IARI is a part.

“This method helps farmers to grow paddy when the monsoon is not that great. Though this method is used in India, it is perhaps new to the US,” the official told IANS seeking anonymity as he is not authorized to speak to the media.

Generally, paddy seeds are allowed to grow shoots in a small monitored area before being transplanted to the fields. But in the direct seeding method, it is sowed directly in the field.

“We have made all the arrangement for the visit. Besides, she will also made a field visit but inside the institute campus. She is expected to interact with top scientists of IARI,” the official added.

Several US officials have earlier visited IARI and discussed issues including a possible farmers’ exchange programme. Micheal Keenum, then under secretary for farm and foreign agriculture, had toured the institute. Keenum too had visited Barota village in Sonepat, Haryana to observe farm practices.

During President George W. Bush’s visit in 2006, agriculture was a key issue of discussion between Indian and the US.

Clinton, who arrives in Mumbai Friday night, is scheduled to reach here Sunday afternoon. She will be staying at the Taj Palace Hotel.
