American Center attack kingpin brought to Kolkata for probe

Kolkata: Mohammad Sadiq alias Sadakat, the prime accused in the attack on the American Center here in 2002, was Sunday brought to Kolkata for interrogation and presented to a city court, police said.

“Sadakat was the prime accused in the American Center attack in 2002. He has been brought to Kolkata from Hyderabad for interrogation on specific cases,” Kolkata Police Joint Commissioner (Special Task Force) Rajiv Kumar said.

“He has been produced in the chief metropolitan magistrate’s court and taken into 14 days’ police custody,” Kumar added.

The attack on the American Center killed six persons and left many others injured.

According to police sources, two other accused in the case – Amir Reza Khan and Asif Reza Khan – had been killed in encounter with the police earlier and another prime accused Aftab Ansari, who was also responsible for the abduction of the shoe baron Partha Roy Burman, is now in jail.

Sadakat, who was an active member of the Indian Mujahideen, fired from an AK-47 rifle and was responsible for the killings outside the American Center. He was also suspected to be involved in various subversive activities.

According to sources Sadakat, who hails from Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested from the Cheetah Camp near Trombay on September 24 last year by Mumbai Police.
