Viplav Kumar, senior superintendent of police in north Kashmir’s border district of Kupwara, told reporters: “Troops of 7 para regiment noticed suspicious movements in Lashdat area of the LoC in Machil sector late Monday evening.

“A group of intruding militants was challenged to surrender following which they opened fire on the troops. After a nightlong gunfight that ended early this morning, four militants were killed from whose possession 4 AK rifles have been recovered. Searches are still going on in the area,” the police officer said.

Machil sector is 170 km north of Jammu and Kashmir summer capital Srinagar.

Though the levels of violence in this border state have recorded a decline in the last three years, authorities have been saying incursion attempts into the hinterland have increased during the last seven months compared to the same period last year.
