New Delhi : A class six student was crushed to death when a speeding Blueline bus hit the boy in a bid to overtake another Blueline bus, taking the toll of those killed by the capital’s privately operated buses to 77 this year.
The accident occurred at around 1.30 p.m. when a speeding bus, plying on route 355, hit 13-year-old Mahesh Jha outside his Khalsa Public School in the Karol Bagh area of central Delhi.
The driver of the bus, going from Anand Parbat to Noida, on the outskirts of the national capital, was racing with another Blueline bus when the incident occurred.
“Jha was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead,” said a senior police official.
“We have registered a case of negligence against the bus driver, who fled with the bus after the incident,” the official added.
In a separate incident, 40-year-old Jahid suffered critical injuries after he came under the wheels of a Blueline bus, plying on route 301, near Ambedkar stadium in central Delhi.
The incident occurred in the evening, when Jahid was alighting from the bus. The victim was admitted to a nearby hospital, where his condition was stated to be critical.
Police have arrested the driver and the conductor of the bus. “We have registered a case of negligent driving and are investigating the matter,” a police official said.
There are more than 4,000 Blueline buses in the capital and form a crucial part of its public transport system. Known as “killer buses,” these had claimed nearly 100 lives last year.
