Kochi: The union president of the SVS College in Mangalore, where a student was banned from attending classes wearing a burqa, has lodged a police complaint alleging that he has been receiving threatening calls on his phone. Bharath Kulal, the union president, told the media that he began receiving threat calls on Tuesday after the burqa issue came in the media. He filed a complaint with the police when he reportedly got threat calls from an international number.
In another development, another Mangalore college decided to allow its Muslim girl students wear the head scarf in uniform colour in the campus. The Uppinangady Government College, where the burqa issue had arisen, has resolved the problem by letting its students wear the head scarf which should be in conformity with the colour of the prescribed uniform. However, the girls should take off their traditional black burqas at the ladies’ room before attending the classes.
At the same time, stalemate continues at the SVS College in Bantwal. The college banned the wearing of burqa inside the campus last day, allegedly due to threatening from outside organizations. This new rule has prevented Aysha Ashmin, a first B.Com student, from attending the classes. Student’s organizations are protesting against the move of the college authorities which, they say, would alienate the minorities from education.
The issue received a lot of attention when some scholars said that the burqa was not mandatory in Islam. However, Islamic students’ organizations protesting against the action of the college maintain that the hijab is the right of Muslim women.
