Srinagar : The Jawahar Tunnel connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country would remain open for traffic round the clock from Tuesday onwards, officials said.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had ordered Monday that the 2.5-km long Jawahar Tunnel, which remained closed for vehicular traffic from midnight till 8 a.m. for the last 18 years, should be thrown open for two-way traffic round the clock from Tuesday.
The move would facilitate entry and exit of hundreds of vehicles carrying essential supplies to the valley and consignments of fruit from the valley to the markets in various cities in the rest of the country.
“All types of vehicular traffic would now ply on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway through the Jawahar Tunnel,” a senior police officer said here Tuesday.
