Clean sweep by SOPU-INSO alliance in Panjab University polls

Chandigarh : The Student Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU)-Indian National Student Organisation (INSO) alliance made a clean sweep in the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) elections Friday, winning all the posts.

The president’s post went to the alliance’s Amit Bhatia of University’s Institute of Applied Management Sciences (UIAMS), who beat Arshdeep Singh Johal of Panjab University Students’ Union (PUSU) by over 600 votes.

Bhatia secured 3,276 votes, while Johal got 2,606 votes.

Virender Bhoora of pharmacy department won the vice president’s post with 2,945 votes, and Deepika Thakur, a research scholar in the geology department, was elected general secretary with 2,880 votes.

The post of joint secretary went to Gaurav Aggarwal, of the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), who got 2,985 votes.

The major groups contesting the varsity elections were the SOPU, PUSU, INSO and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the National Students Union of India (NSUI).

In 2008, the SOPU, which was allied to the ABVP, had made a clean sweep. This time, they contested with a different partner but continued their winning streak.

Following the announcement of the results, the winning alliance took out a massive car rally in the campus to demonstrate their strength. Sweets were distributed to everyone and party supporters danced on the beats of Punjabi dhols to celebrate the victory.

Girls form the majority of students in the university, comprising more than 65 percent of the nearly 11,000 students.

PU is one of the oldest universities in India, being established in 1882 at Lahore. It was relocated at Chandigarh in 1956. the campus, which is spread over an area of 550 acres here in Sector 14 and Sector 25, has around 60 teaching and research departments.
