AMU students’ ad-hoc body starts interactive sessions with V-C

New Delhi: The Students’ Grievance Committee set up as a stop-gap alternative to Students’ Union in the Aligarh Muslim University, has started working with the body addressing the genuine problems and difficulties faced by the students both in the academic departments and residential halls.

Through the committee, the AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof. P. K. Abdu Azis has started holding face-to-face interactive sessions with the students to know their grievances and take decision on the spot to resolve them.



“All the top University functionaries including the Vice Chancellor, Registrar, Controller of Examinations, Proctor, DSW and Finance Officer interact with the students holding top ranks in each class and course of the University. The students air their grievances and the administration takes on the spot decision to redress the problems. The system has set in place a new and powerful mechanism that provide the students of the University an access to address the issues of main concern to the student community,” said Dr Rahat Abrar, Public Relations Officer of the university.

In a two-day interactive meeting presided over by the V-C held yesterday and today more than 300 students representing 325 courses spoke on various issues both students centred and department specific. Without mincing words they openly criticized the existing flaws and deficiencies and demanded immediate action to improve the quality of teaching–learning process in the University.

In the face-to-face interactive meeting with the students the Vice Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis said that he was making all efforts to take this University to number one position among all the educational institutions of the country and help students to achieve success so that they bring laurels to their family and the alma mater, said Dr Abrar. The Vice Chancellor said that the publication of scholarly papers of teachers of the University in journals of national and international repute have placed the Aligarh Muslim University among ten Universities earmarked for highest scientific publication. He said that a very peaceful atmosphere conducive to higher academic pursuits has been ensured in the campus during the last two years and the academic calendar of the University was strictly and successfully followed for all admissions and examinations.

A good number of students hailing from various faculties and departments participated in the meeting of grievance cell and put up their problems before the University administration. Most of the students drew the administration’s attention towards the problems relating to electricity and water supply and cleanliness in the residential halls and seminars rooms. However, several of them raised various issues concerning academic and research facilities in the departments.

Ms. Arina Khan of Department of Geology suggested inviting experts of Earth Sciences and establishing Placement Cell in the department. The students of Department of Chemistry requested to provide better laboratory equipments. Ms. Seema Kumari, a research scholar in the Department of Sociology asked to create a separate seminar room and provide the conveyance facility for field tours to the research scholars of the department. Ms. Amreen Ashraf of Department of Economics emphasized the need of strengthening teacher student relationship and requested to subscribe international journals of higher standard in the department. Ms. Seemin Husain of the Department of Mass Communication expressed the need for arranging special training programmes in radio and television for the students of Mass Communication and inviting distinguished journalists as guest faculties to provide better exposure to the students.

On the second day of the meeting, students of Medical, Engineering and Commerce were invited to participate. The students of Medical College requested the administration to pay special attention to the increasing problem of lack of space especially in view of the soaring number of patients coming to the Medical College. They also urged the University administration to make efforts to arrange dead bodies for practicals.

AMU Registrar Prof. V. K. Abdul Jaleel, Controller of Examinations, Prof. Pervez Mustajab, Finance Office, Ms. Yasmee Jalal Beg, Proctor, Prof. Muzaffar A. Siddiqui, DSW, Prof. M. Zubair Khan and PRO, Dr. Rahat Abrar were also present in the meeting.
