The bomb exploded in one of the tents at Nandagiri village, 56 km from the district headquarters of Phulbani, where dozens of victims of last year’s communal riots have taken shelter, police said.

“We are investing how they brought the crude bomb to the tent,” district superintendent of police S. Praveen Kumar told IANS on telephone.

Kandhamal district, about 200 km from here, witnessed widespread violence after the murder of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four of his aides at his ashram on Aug 23 last year.

More than 25,000 Christians fled their homes after attacks by rampaging mobs, who held Christians responsible for Saraswati’s killing although police blamed the Maoists.

Kumar, however, said the latest incident has no communal angle.
