AMU delegation visits Malapuram to review progress on AMU campus

Patna: A delegation headed by Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis yesterday visited the site at Perinthelmanna in Malapuram district of Kerala which was allotted by the state government for setting up the AMU campus. The central government has already allocated an initial amount of Rs. 25 crore in the current budget for the campus.
Prof. Azis appreciated the initiatives taken by the government of Kerala in providing the necessary facilities including the land for setting up the AMU campus and for starting the process of land acquisition on a fast track basis.

He informed the media persons that the Executive Council of AMU in its meeting held on January 7, 2008 and the Court in its meeting held on December 2, 2007 had decided to establish five regional campuses of AMU in the backward areas populated by minorities. The districts proposed for campuses were Murshidabad in West Bengal, Malappuram in Kerala, Katihar in Bihar, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh and Pune in Maharashtra that were approved by the central government.

Earlier, Aligarh Muslim University had received proposal from the Chief Minister of West Bengal, chief secretary of government of Kerala and the Gharib Nawaz Foundation for Education of Muslims of Bhopal suggesting to establish campusees of AMU in their respective regions.

Mr. P.K. Abdul Azis revealed that the Aligarh model consisting of schools, faculties, Medical and Engineering Colleges and Departments of Advanced Studies will be established in Malappuram so that the students can get an opportunity of wholesome education right from primary to post graduate including in Professional disciplines.

While discussing with the state officials he stressed the need for building a 100-feet wide access road and a specific time-frame for handing over the acquired land in two phases. The District Collector, Mr. M.C Mohan Dass and the Deputy Collector, Land Acquisition Mr. Gopalakrishna E.K has assured that the Kerala government will provide 150 acres of acquired land by the end of October this year on fast track basis and rest of the 242 acres by the end of the year. The Officials of Electricity Department present in the meeting assured the Supply of 5 to 10 MW of uninterrupted power supply to the campus to be established.

Expressing his feeling on establishment of these campuses he said that the proposal of setting up campuses including one in Malappuram district is a powerful projection of an ambitious plan to expand the AMU’s academic and research programmes to meet the challenging needs of the marginalized and excluded social class.
