Minister Qureshi confident of Pakistan’s anti-teror success with world support

Washington : Pakistan has played a critical role in the fight against terrorism and is confident of curbing the menace with the support of its friends, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said.

Speaking at Pacific Council on International Policy in Los Angeles, the top Pakistani diplomat reaffirmed the democratic government’s resolve to root out the menace from the country.

He told the gathering of experts about Pakistan’s recent anti-militant gains in the northwestern areas and elaborated on Islamabad’s successful strategy.

“Pakistan has been playing a key role in fighting terrorism and we are confident of defeating the menace with the support of international community and our friends,” he stated.

Discussing Pakistan-U.S. relations, the foreign minister urged the U.S. administration to allow increased access to Pakistani exports and assist in building Pakistan’s counterterrorism capacity.

Quershi also reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to promote peace, security and development in the region and in this respect spoke about Pakistan’s constructive diplomacy with India to reduce tensions in South Asia.

Commenting on the Afghan situation, the foreign minister stated Pakistan wishes to see a peaceful, prosperous and stable Afghanistan in the larger interest of the region.

During the talk, the foreign minister dilated upon geo-stratetgic importance of Pakistan, internal political developments and the emerging regional situation. The event as attended by over 200 political figures, business leaders, academics, investors, and experts.

The Pacific Council on International Policy is an independent, non-partisan, membership organization, which seeks to promote better understanding of international issues. The Council’s membership consists of a diverse network of leaders from a broad range of professions and business sectors. Warren Christopher, former US Secretary of State, is co-chair of the Council.

The Council is closely associated to the present U.S. administration. Many Heads of States/Governments, influential business leaders, philanthropists have addressed the Council. Foreign Minister Qureshi is in Los Angles on an official visit and attending a series of events to highlight Islamabad’s views on regional and international issues.
