New Delhi: India Thursday decided to strengthen its fire and emergency services at an estimated cost of Rs.200 crore.
The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The home ministry had proposed the strengthening of fire and emergency services in the country at an estimated cost of Rs.200 crore during the remaining period of the Eleventh Five Year Plan (2008-12).
While the centre’s contribution will be 75 percent, the state’s will be 25 percent. But the ratio for northeastern region will be 90:10.
“The scheme will fill the existing gaps in fire fighting and rescue capability by introduction of modern technology,” according to a statement issued here.
The aim is also to create awareness among the masses and school children on fire safety.
“It will help preparing future plans about upgradation of fire services in the country,” it added.
