The decision was taken at a Delhi Jal Board (DJB) meeting headed by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

“The chief minister felt that the proposed rates were high and needed to be rationalised. Because of this the decision to hike water tariff was deferred today (Tuesday),” said a DJB official on the condition of anonymity.

“The new rates would now be presented in the next meeting that will take place next week. We are very sure that in that meeting she will clear the proposal of hiking tariff. It has been years since the rates were increased,” the official added.

However, a source said: “Another major reason behind not taking the decision of increasing water tariff today (Tuesday) was the public anger against the hike in bus fares.”
