Washington : Failure to implement the Tegucigalpa-San Jose Accord could jeopardize recognition by the international community of the upcoming Nov. 29 election in Honduras, the US State Department said on Friday.
“Our policy goal has always been to help the Hondurans restore the democratic order in their country,” the department said in a statement released on Friday night. “The signing of the accord, through difficult negotiations among the Hondurans themselves with support from the OAS (Organization of American States) and the international community, provides the path to that goal.” “We urge both sides to act in the best interests of the Honduran people and return to the table immediately to reach agreement on the formation of a unity government,” the department said. “The formation of a Government of Unity and National Reconciliation will serve the Honduran people and will change the political dynamics in the country in a positive way. It is urgent that this government be created immediately.” The Honduran political crisis began last June after the Honduran military removed Honduran President Manuel Zelaya from office, expelling Zelaya and allowing Speaker of the Honduran Congress Roberto Micheletti to be sworn in as interim president.
