Jaipur : The Gujjar community in Rajasthan will start “massive protests” again if the state government fails to send a letter to the central government recommending tribal status for them by Sep 12.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the community’s leaders at Badke-Balaji near here late Saturday.
In case, the state government fails to meet the Sep 12 deadline, “massive agitations” would be held all over the state so that it becomes memorable for the coming generations. The protests would be non-violent, a source from the community told IANS Sunday.
However, a meeting would be held on Sep 12 to decide on a specific course of action and the same would be declared in the mahapanchayat (mass meet) of Gujjars in Dholpur scheduled on Sep 13, the source said.
The Justice Chopra committee, which was set up by the state government on June 12 to look into the demands of the Gujjars was to submit its report on Sep 12 this year. However, in a letter to the state government on Aug 30, it said that it wants an extension till Dec 15.
The committee has said that till now it has only been able to complete around 40 to 50 percent of the work.
Gujjars, who belong to the other backward classes (OBC), held protests all over Rajasthan from May 29 to June 4 demanding their inclusion into the scheduled tribe category. Normal life was paralysed and at least 26 people were killed in the violence.
