Guinea’s Ambassador say Ruling Party has no credible opposition in country’s elections

Luanda : Equatorial Guinea’s Ambassador to Angola, Eustáquio Nseng Esono, says the ruling Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea has no opponent capable of impeding its victory in the Nov 29 elections.

He told Angop here Sunday that the presidential election also taking place at the same time would see the participation of five candidates, including outgoing president Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, the leader of the Democratic Party, which had been ruling the country for the last 30 years.

President Obiang Nguema is facing challenges from four other candidates — Placido Minko Abogo of the Convergence Party for Social Democracy, Carmelo Mba Bacale (People Action of Equatorial Guinea), Achivaldo Montero, (People Union) and Buenaventura Monswi M’Asumu (Social Democrat Coalition).

The ambassador noted that during the 2002 presidential election, President Obiang Nguema, who has ruled Equatorial Guinea since 1979, won the poll with 97.1 per cent of the votes.
