Moscow : Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov will soon replace Mikhail Fradkov as prime minister, the influential business daily Vedomosti reported Wednesday.
Ivanov, also an expected candidate for next year’s presidential election, has taken the lead in the presidential run over his colleague and competitor Dmitry Medvedev, Vedomosti said, citing an unnamed high-ranking Kremlin source.
The former defence minister, who is seen as better prepared to succeed President Vladimir Putin, has been making frequent public appearances in recent months.
A well-placed source confirmed that the government is discussing impending change of prime minister, Vedomosti said.
No comment was available from Ivanov’s office on the report.
