During a brief address by speaker Uday Narayan Chaudhary, the opposition members displayed placards and shouted slogans.

The session is expected to be stormy as the opposition parties are determined to corner the state government on various issues such as the deteriorating law and order situation, delay in the implementation of the Bandyopadhay Commission report on land reforms, alleged corruption in the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), Dalit and Mahadalit issues and the failure to handle the severe drought situation in 26 districts.

The opposition leaders made it clear that they would raise issues of public interest and “expose” the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.

Abdul Bari Siddiqui, state president of the main opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), said there were hundreds of issues like hunger deaths, food scarcity, and deteriorating law and order with cases of kidnapping, murder, extortion and looting continuing as usual.

The winter session will end Dec 24.
