The government took back the affidavit saying it did not intend to injure the religious feelings of any community. A bench headed by Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan then adjourned the matter for three months.

The government will file a fresh affidavit in due course.

The move came a day after Law Minister H.R. Bhardwaj said the government was disassociating itself from the affidavit filed by the Archaeological Survey of India stating there was no evidence to prove the existence of characters in Hindu holy epic Ramayana.
