Dhaka : Over 150 people were injured, some critically, in Bangladesh Friday in clashes between the police and garment workers and students on the outskirts of the capital city.
Angry garment factory workers, demanding higher wages, clashed with the police at the Dhaka Export Processing Zone (DEPZ), resulting in injuries to about 100 workers, Star Online said quoting a report of ATN Bangla television channel.
The workers ransacked several garment factories in the Savar area.
In another incident Friday morning, students of a training centre clashed with locals over a minor matter, leading to police intervention. Fifty of them were injured.
Students later ransacked 40 shops at the local Mollah Market.
On Aug 20-22, universities across Bangladesh witnessed violence for which two teachers and several students were sent to jail.
The country’s garment manufacturing industry, the principal foreign exchange earner, has witnessed recurring violence over disputes on wages and working conditions.
About 300 factories were destroyed in clashes and violence in May last year.
Contingents of the army, police, Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and the para-military Rapid Action Battalion have been deployed in the area.
Bangladesh Export Promotion Zone Authority (BEPZA) Chairman, Brig. Gen. Ashraf Abdullah Yousuf, said the situation was under control.
