Paris : French President Nicolas Sarkozy and US leader Barack Obama have discussed the idea of an international conference for the reconstruction of Haiti, which was devastated two days ago by a massive earthquake, diplomats revealed here Friday.
The French and US Presidents discussed Haiti in a telephone conversation they held overnight, and specifically a French proposal to hold a conference to help rebuild the island, the diplomats said.
Late Thursday, Frances President met with his senior government leaders and vowed to intensify efforts to bring relief aid and search and rescue teams to Haiti, where the Red Cross now estimates between 35,000-50,000 people perished in the 7.0 degree Richter scale quake. Three million other Haitians are homeless or injured as a result of the earth tremor.
France said early Friday that it had managed to take out 91 French people on Thursday and was evacuating hundreds of other nationals among the 1,400 French people resident at the time of the quake.
Six French are reported to have died and around 300 are to be taken out taken out of the stricken zone Friday, while 60 are still missing, according to the latest figures.
