New Delhi: With four agreements, assured food grain supply and a soft loan of $250 million, Nepal President Ram Baran Yadav completed his first ever tour to India Thursday, with both countries expressing hope for the ongoing peace process in the Himalayan republic.
Yadav left for Kathmandu Thursday evening, after a four-day state sojourn – his first foreign tour after his election in 2008 – marking Nepal’s transition from a kingdom to a republic.
A press release issued by the external affairs ministry said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh offered help in Nepal’s peace process, as well as in its economic transformation.
“The prime minister of India conveyed that India attached the highest priority to further strengthening relations with Nepal in every sphere. He expressed full support for the ongoing peace process and efforts to bring about economic transformation in Nepal,” it said.
The Nepali president and the Indian prime minister held delegation level talks after which four agreements were signed.
India also agreed to give Nepal a new concessional line of credit of $250 million.
Besides, India will supply 50,000 tonnes of wheat, 25,000 tonnes of rice and 10,000 tonnes of yellow peas dal to Nepal.
Singh conveyed India’s readiness to supply 200,000 tonnes of wheat, if required by Nepal.
President Pratibha Patil hosted a state banquet in honour of Yadav, who studied medicine in Kolkata.
