US N-deal talk with Pakistan ‘astonishing’, says BJP

New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s statement that the US may consider a nuclear agreement with Islamabad was “astonishing” in the wake of Pakistan’s “poor” non-proliferation track record.

“This is astonishing, especially in the light of Pakistan’s poor record in the nuclear non-proliferation matters,” BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said in a statement.

Sitharaman was referring to Clinton’s statement that the US may consider having with Pakistan a nuclear agreement similar to what it has with India.

“(Pakistan’s nuclear scientist) A.Q. Khan had caught international attention in the way he had unbridled access to nuclear material, which he smuggled in and out of Pakistan,” the BJP leader said.

“Pakistan’s track record is poor also because periodically we have heard and read reports of how both the political and scientific communities are worried that the control of their nuclear facilities are in danger of falling into wrong hands,” she said.
