London : A vessel ironically called Titanic was saved from sinking near the island of St Kitts after one of three men on board dialled a friend in distant Britain — just in time.
It was the only telephone number he could remember when tragedy struck.
Mark Corbett and two other crewmen were aboard the 1,700-tonne motor yacht when it began to take in water while sailing from Grenada to Puerto Rico.
Using a satellite telephone, Corbett called up friend Alex Evans who, after initially thinking it was all a prank, quickly coordinated a rescue operation, the Daily Mail reported Wednesday.
Spotter planes found the vessel barely above water. A rescue operation was launched. Finally, the US Coast Guard guided it to safety in St Kitts.
And so, unlike the earlier Titanic, this one survived.
