Srinagar : Incessant rainfall for the past three nights has raised the water levels in all major rivers and lakes in the Kashmir Valley while landslides and fresh snowfall have blocked the Srinagar-Leh highway Wednesday.
The water level in Jhelum, running through the middle of the summer capital Srinagar, rose due to heavy nightlong rains in catchment areas.
Landslides near Drass in Kargil district closed the Srinagar-Leh highway, which had been opened for light vehicular traffic last week.
“Snowfall in the Zojilla Pass and landslides have closed the highway. It will take two to three days to open the highway for traffic,” an official from the traffic department said.
Cloudburst in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district Tuesday washed away a bridge connecting the Bandipora and Sopore towns.
“A western disturbance is passing over Jammu and Kashmir these days, resulting in the inclement weather. The weather will show improvement from tomorrow as the western disturbance will start to weaken,” said Sonum Lotus, director of the weather office here.
The official said rains in the valley and other parts of Jammu region had brought down the temperatures considerably.
While temperatures fell by five degrees in Jammu, in the valley they have remained average for April.
