New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday criticised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s comment that law will take its own course in Parliament House attack convict Afzal Guru’s case, terming it as “improper” and “ambiguous”.
“He says that the law will take its own course. What did he mean by saying that about a case which was already cleared by the Supreme Court much earlier? He should have replied on what the government was doing on its part on the matter,” BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra told reporters here.
Malhotra said the law has taken its course on the prosecution of Guru and it was now up to the central government to take a final decision on the matter. “The comment was improper and ambiguous.”
Addessing a press conference Monday to mark the first year of the United Progressive Alliance government’s second term, the prime minister said that as far as the case of Guru is concerned, there is a law of the land and there are legal processes in the country. “I think they should be allowed to take their own course.”
The BJP’s Delhi unit chief Vijendra Gupta questioned Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s comment that differences of opinion among two chief secretaries of the Delhi government on Guru’s case led to delay in dealing with his file.
“The opinion of the chief minister was sought and not that of chief secretaries. We want a daily account of what happened on the file,” Gupta said.
Meanwhile, the two leaders also demanded that Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) should reduce power tariff in the capital without any pressure from the state government.
