Gaza : Islamic Hamas movement denied on Saturday reports that it had presented a new initiative to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement to end Gaza crisis.
“These reports are a mixture of ideas suggested by Hamas and other news came from sources irrelevant to Hamas,” Sami Abu Zuhri, Hamas’ spokesman in Gaza, told reporters.
On Friday, a London-based Arabic daily reported that Hamas had formulated a plan of reconciliation with Abbas and Fatah months after the Islamic movement seized control of the Gaza Strip from pro-Abbas forces.
According to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, Hamas’ proposal was to hand over the compounds of the security services of forces loyal to Abbas to the Egyptian government until a national dialogue is resumed.
“We don’t think that Egypt can be a direct part of the internal Palestinian differences…. Egypt plays an equal role by being concerned to bring Fatah and Hamas together,” Abu Zuhri added.
Hamas, which won January 2006 elections, said the Gaza takeover was meant to block plans by security chiefs to stage a coup against the Islamic movement, relying on American and Israeli support.
As a result, Abbas sacked a Hamas government and formed an administration ruling from West Bank while Hamas continued administrating Gaza and neglected Abbas’ decision.
Abu Zuhri reiterated that his movement wants unconditional talks with Fatah, forming a national unity government and restructuring the security services “on national basis.”
