EU hails Constituent Assembly extension in Nepal

Kathmandu : The European Union (EU), including a parliamentary delegation on a visit to Nepal, has welcomed the accord between major political parties of the country to extend the tenure of the Constituent Assembly for one more year.

EU member countries including Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Netherlands and Britain have emphasized “the urgent need for the parties to work together, in the interest of the people of this country, in a spirit of consensus and do whatever it takes to implement the Comprehensive Peace Accord”, EuAsiaNews reported Sunday.

“We look forward to seeing a shared understanding of the renewed efforts and good faith required to do this,” the EU said in a statement.

The EU members urged the political leadership in Nepal to continue talks for a consensus on issues related to the peace process and constitution writing.

Norway and Switzerland also said they welcome the political parties’ last minute agreement to extend the tenure of the Constituent Assembly for a further 12 months.

“We share the hope of the Nepali people that the difficulties of recent months can be overcome, and that the parties will now give fresh impetus to drafting the constitution on time,” a joint statement said.
